John O'Donovan
John is Head of Architecture for BBC News and Sport Online services, covering a range of web, mobile and Interactive TV products. Prior to this John has worked in a number of areas of the BBC and been instrumental in large scale projects, including the conception and development of BBC iPlayer. John has a broad spectrum of experience across new media, broadcast and enterprise technology platforms and before joining the BBC has worked for, amongst others, Sky TV and British Airways on development of enterprise services. He has also consulted for a number of broadcasters, including the South African and Swiss national broadcasters to develop roadmaps and specific products.
Before stress was invented John used to love building high performance graphics systems which gathered and processed data to render graphics in real time for for live broadcasts of Weather, Sport and Election programmes. At the other end of the scale, John has built many design led, award winning interactive products.
It is this wide interest in technology, design, product and business issues which gives John an informed perspective on many of the challenges faced across the media and technology industries.
When the BBC met SEO
BBC News recently attracted a good deal of attention, after changing its policy for writing news headlines. Previously - and controversially - SEO-friendly headlines had not been a priority. John played an instrumental role in the shift towards SEO, and he will be discussing his experiences developing and implementing a coherent SEO strategy across what is arguably the world's top news website.
